Service to Society
The first Child Welfare Centre was started at the Park street office premises in the year 1969. At present , KCSSC operates Child Welfare Centres at Lenin Sarani, Thakurpukur and Ekbalpore.
The Centre had started Holy Week Services in Malayalam at St. Xavier’s
Primary School in the year 1975 at the initiative of Fr. P.C. Mathew
S.J., then spiritual advisor of the Centre. Even today, the Holy Week
services continue to be held at the same place. The Centre had also
started Malayalam Eucharisitc Celebration on Sundays at St. Ignatius
Church, Kidderpore in the year 1978, followed by Malayalam services
at the Church of Christ The King, Park Circus, in the year 1982. The
Sunday Eucharistic Celebration is well attended by a vibrant congregation
Kerala Catholics.
In the year 1983, KCSSC purchased a property with an old building near Thakurpukur Bus stand and converted it into a boys’ hostel named St. Thomas Bhawan. The boys’ hostel was meant to provide accommodation at a nominal chargefor all boys coming from outside Kolkata for studies or jobs. In 2001 a new building was constructed to provide better facilities and more accommodation. Now provisions are being made to extend one more floor to the present structure to extend the facility to more of the economically weaker sections of society.
In the year 1990, a plotwas purchased at Prince Anwar Shah road for a Women’s Hostel, close to the South City Mall. The hostel named Alphonsa Bhawan was dedicated to the women of Calcutta by Mother Teresa and was meant to shelter lower income group working women. It started functioning in 1996, and today Alphonsa Bhawan has provisions for 50 women and admission is granted to any women irrespective of cast, creed and religion.
KCSSC provides need based scholarships to students and also awards children of members who secure the highest marks in the Xth and XIIth Standard examinations every year. The economically poor who approach the Centre , are also given financial assistance. In 1981, the Centre had made ten houses for flood victims at Khari Village in South 24 Parganas. From time to time, blood donation camps are also held by the Centre.
